The new Huawei VR Glass jumps to 6DOF tracking. Think of it as similar to the jump from Oculus Go to Quest; 3DOF (or three degrees of freedom) allows you to spin and tilt your head in VR, but only with 6DOF can you physically move it through virtual space.

Accompanying the new headset is a pair of 6DOF controllers that look very much like Oculus Touch controllers. There is one key difference, though, and that’s in the tracking ring. A pair of divets allow you to stack the controllers on top of each other and then place the VR Glass over them for neat storage.

6DOF Devkit components

Huawei people have been very smart because instead of releasing a completely different headset, they have just released an add-on that you can plug on the top of your already existing 3DOF VR headset to transform it into a full 6DOF device. This remind me of the initial choice that HTC took when it released the : in the end, it was never released and the company just launched the new Vive Focus Plus.

The kit is composed by:

  • An inside-out tracking add-on, that you attach to your glasses so that that they can track themselves (positional tracking) and the controllers;

  • Two controllers that are very similar to the Oculus Touch. The buttons and the triggers are the ones that are now the de-facto standard for VR controllers.

The device featured two 2.1-inch LCD displays, that offered a combined resolution of 3200 x 1600 pixels, and up to 90Hz refresh rate. The refresh rate depended on the type of device it was connected to. Since it did not come with a built-in battery, the VR glasses weighed just 166 grams. Aside from that, it had two diopter dials that allowed people wearing prescription glasses to adjust the focus.
Furthermore, the Huawei VR glasses are compatible with both Huawei-branded smartphones and PCs. The 2nd generation Huawei VR glass is likely to retain this feature. Also, the headset could draw its juices from an external source such as a connected portable battery pack, PC, or smartphone. Moreover, it could ship with a controller in the box. Details about the 2nd Generation Huawei VR Glass launch date are still scarce. However, it is likely to launch before this year ends.

For audio, the HUAWEI VR Glass 6DoF allows spatial positioning, environment modeling, and multi-channel sound effects to give users an immersive gaming and viewing experience while using this headset. Additionally, there is a 3.5mm headphone jack and microphone.
